Zuneigung

Zuneigung

In the language of art, there are gestures that need no words. The sculpture “Zuneigung” is such a gesture — captured in the living structure of wood. Here, Daniel Bucur explores gentle opening and mindful approach. While nature often shapes wood toward resistance and rigidity, the artist breaks through this hardness and lends the material an almost human warmth.

The form of the sculpture is characterized by a flowing curvature that creates an impression of softness. It is as if the wood were gently inclining beneath an invisible hand, much like we turn toward a loved one. This deliberate curve breaks with the strict vertical and creates an atmosphere of trust and harmony. Bucur masterfully plays with the grain here: the lines of the wood follow the bend like soft waves, emphasizing the dynamic of “Zuneigung.”

The surface has been sanded and refined in an elaborate process until it achieves a tactile quality that invites touch. In the bustle of everyday life pulsing outside the doors of the Hotel am Stephansplatz, this work forms a place of calm. It reminds the viewer that true strength often lies in empathy and in turning toward others. “Zuneigung” is a tribute to the subtle nuances of life and invites the guest to sharpen their perception and enjoy the beauty of gentle tones. A work of art that warms the space not only visually, but emotionally as well.

Wirbelsäule

The sculpture “Wirbelsäule” is a profound exploration of steadfastness and inner order. In the architecture of life, the spine is the central element that keeps us upright — it is the bridge between heaven and earth. Daniel Bucur transfers this anatomical principle to wood and creates a stele that is far more than a mere form: it is a symbol of human dignity and the upright posture.

The artist has carved a structure from the massive trunk that recalls individual vertebrae without becoming purely anatomical. The regular incisions and protrusions create a vertical rhythm that guides the eye upward. It is a play of light and shadow: the depth of the cuts gives the work an almost sacred weight, standing in striking contrast to the delicate craftsmanship.

In this sculpture, the wood becomes a monument to stability. It reminds us that we — just like the tree — need a strong center in order to withstand the storms of time. “Wirbelsäule” at the Boutique Hotel am Stephansplatz invites viewers to reflect on their own inner posture. A powerful work that lends the space a grounded, almost archaic energy and encourages the guest to continue their path with renewed uprightness.

Balance

Balance is not a static state, but an ongoing process of finding equilibrium. In the sculpture “Balance”, Daniel Bucur explores the search for the center — a motif that gains particular relevance amid the hectic pulse of the city of Vienna. The work captivates through a flowing, almost weightless line that makes one forget the massive character of the wood.

Here, Bucur uses the natural tension of the material to create a form that, despite its weight, radiates an incredible lightness. The sculpture seems to hover on its base, perfectly poised between ascent and grounding. It is this play with opposites that makes Daniel Bucur’s work so unique: the unyielding hardness of grown wood meets the gentle curve of a perfect arc.

Viewed from different sides, the center of gravity appears to shift visually. It reminds us that balance in life means remaining in motion without losing one’s own standpoint. The carefully polished surface emphasizes the calmness of the form and invites the eye to follow the perfect lines until one finds a moment of inner stability. “Balance” is more than a sculpture; it is a silent promise of permanence and inner equilibrium, filling the space with harmonious energy. A work of art that encourages the guest to pause for a moment and feel their own center.

Dryade

Wood is far more than merely a material — it is a vessel for stories, for time, and, if one believes the myths of antiquity, also for the soul of nature. The sculpture “Dryade” is Daniel Bucur’s homage to the mysterious guardian beings of the forests. In Greek mythology, dryads were the nymphs who lived in symbiosis with their trees: if the tree died, their existence ended as well.

In this work, Bucur seems to have captured precisely that moment in which the spirit of the tree emerges from rigid matter. The wing-like form rising upward evokes a longing for freedom and light. While the lower end of the sculpture still appears firmly rooted in the earthiness of the wood, the upper part unfolds a dynamic reminiscent of delicate wings or flowing garments.

The light, almost luminous quality of the wood emphasizes the ethereal character of the figure. It is as if the artist had removed the protective bark in order to reveal the essential being within. In the context of the Boutique Hotel am Stephansplatz, a place of retreat in the midst of Vienna’s urban heart, “Dryade” functions as a silent mediator between the material world and the invisible. It invites the viewer not to see the wood merely as a surface, but as a living monument carrying a soul within it. A work that compels us to pause and reminds us that we are part of a living natural world worthy of protection.
